The date 21 October was not just another ordinary day on our calendar. Without a doubt, it was a day marked by the memory of the journey undertaken by Marty McFly and Doc Brown in “Back to the Future”. This is the date of destination of their travel through time from 1985 to a distant, modern, avant-garde future: our 2015.

The film saga by Zemeckis, which combines comedy, science fiction and historical narrative, foresaw an optimistic future full of technologies to the service of both comfort and fun. Many of his predictions are now a reality today: videoconferences, phone-answering sunglasses, smart clothes, drones and 3D cinema, among others.

But what has happened to houses over these 30 years?

Smart houses

Today there are increasingly more houses that can be unlocked via magnetic card or digital fingerprint. And although these technologies are evolving quickly in homes, there is still a way to go before knockers and doorknobs disappear.

Yet what Doc and Marty would never have imagined is home automation technology: yes, smart houses.

Home automation has enabled us to optimise all the functions of our homes, from the simplest tasks such as opening and closing the shutters, to determining the optimal temperature of the property, switching on and off the individual or central heating system, controlling security, enjoying music at harmonious decibels and reproducing ambiance scenery.

And the best part of all: control can be executed by voice, tablet pc, mobile phone, a small modular control panel or touch screen.

Renewable energies

The only reference made to the “energetic” future of the homes of the saga proposes household nuclear reactors that can supply all the power needed for the entire property.

Far from this premonition, renewable energies today are a much safer, more efficient and less polluting reality than the MR FUSION Home Energy Reactor that appears in the film.

The wide range of technology applied to energy savings has enabled the development of bioclimatic design. In other words: maximum comfort and performance, less energy consumption, total security, individualised heating, natural air conditioning, and most importantly, zero CO2 emissions.

Security in a fingerprint

In the “Back to the Future” saga, one of the technologies that make an ostentatious and somewhat rudimentary appearance is the use of the fingerprint.

The creators of the film never imagined that this technology, which in the film is applied to quick chip payment, would be so closely associated with the home and building security systems of today.

A technology that began in the industrial sector is now a reality in our homes.
